Circulation Policy and Procedures
I . Library Cards
Patrons must have a current, valid Murray Library card in their possession to borrow library materials. The term "library materials" includes books, audio and video cassettes, DVDs, compact discs, magazines, and any other circulating items.
The Murray Library card allows patrons to take advantage of a wide range of services including borrowing materials, accessing the Internet, accessing our wireless network, and using meeting and study rooms. From the library’s website, online patrons can use their card to renew borrowed materials, place a hold on requested materials, and view the status of their account.
Eligibility and Application
Individuals 18 years of age or older can register for a free library card. Applicants must have identification which includes their current address.
A Utah “Driving Privilege Card” cannot be used for identification purposes when applying for a library card (SB 227; 2005).
A parent or legal guardian of minor less than 18 years of age must authorize the minor's library card application, in person, with a signature at the time of application.
A parent or legal guardian of minor less than 18 years of age must authorize the minor's access to the Internet, in person, with a signature.
Parents or legal guardians are responsible for materials borrowed and for the appropriate use of the Internet by their children.
Lost or stolen cards and changes in residence, telephone number, or email address should be reported to the library as soon as possible.
The Murray Library has free, reciprocal borrowing privileges with the Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County libraries. However, patrons must present identification with their current address to register their city or county library card with the Murray Library to borrow materials.
II. Loan Period
Books and audio materials (audio books and music on compact disc) may be borrowed for a twenty-eight (28) day loan period.
Magazines may be borrowed for a seven (7) day loan period.
Video materials may be borrowed by patrons 18 years of age or older for a seven (7) day loan period.
Library materials may be renewed twice, either in person, by telephone (264-2573), or by using the library web site (murraylibrary.org). Library materials for which a “hold” has been placed by another patron may not be renewed.
Patrons may check out five of each audio-visual format at a time. There is no limit to the number of books you may check out.
Patrons may request a “hold” for a specific title. Notification will be sent by postal mail or email when the title is available.
Electronic content that is downloaded from the Internet is subject to the circulation policies of the different content providers. For example, some content providers program a twenty-one day period that cannot be altered by the subscribing library.
III. Charges
Patrons are responsible for library materials charged to their card.
Fines
A fine will be charged on each overdue item.
Fines will not exceed the cost of the item.
Overdue fines for library materials which circulate for 28 days are calculated at a rate of 10¢ per day, per item with a maximum charge of $5.00.

The replacement cost for lost or damaged library materials is the retail price plus a $5.00 processing fee.
